When referring to Meghan, the author states “..finally millions of children of mixed-race background will have a role model to see up to.“ Does he mean there were no other mixed-race people to look up to?

I agree that he probably didn’t mean that there were no other mixed race people to look up to. I think because this is a “real life Princess” that perhaps that might capture the interest of a younger generation. I mean, Barack Obama was president, but do you think a 10 year old girl cares about that? Just an unfortunate turn of phrase maybe?

I don’t think that the reporter necessarily meant to say that there are no other mixed-race role models, however, believe that he meant that Meghan Markle is a new, positive mixed-race role model for people to look up to. However, on the contrary, he could have said one thing but meant something else which is what I believed happened. In my opinion, he probably didn’t know any other mixed-race role models for children to look up to and was perhaps uneducated on the matter. This or he didn’t mean what he said.
